Toni Albertson is the professor of journalism and adviser of student media at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA. Since coming to Mt. SAC in 2006, she turned around a troubled journalism program with low enrollment and a defunct student media into a thriving award-winning program and increased enrollment in all journalism courses. Her focus is entrepreneurial journalism, new media, and a free student press. For the past decade she has been studying the shift from print college media to digital.
Toni is an advocate for student press and is constantly researching ways to keep student media alive in an environment that is constantly changing and evolving. She is a firm believer that responsible and ethical journalism excellence is key, but that the method of delivery is secondary. As print newspapers scamper to find answers to the challenges the Internet has brought, students must adapt to these changes by becoming multi-skilled individuals while never losing sight of the importance of good, ethical reporting.
Prior to being hired full-time at Mt. SAC, Toni restarted the student newspaper at Los Angeles Trade Tech College; founded “The Journalism Project,” designed to restart or rescue vulnerable college journalism programs; and conducted “The Future of California Community College Journalism Programs and Student Newspapers” study. She is a former professor of journalism and adviser of the student newspaper at Oxnard Community College and Moorpark College, and an adjunct journalism instructor at Los Angeles Pierce College and Los Angeles City College.
She is a yearly speaker at the College Media Advisers Spring National Convention, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications AEJMC National Convention, and numerous journalism and media events. She also serves as president and program coordinator for the Community College Journalism Association CCJA in conjunction with the AEJMC.
Prior to teaching, she was the publisher and editor-in-chief of Music Confidential Magazine, an internationally-distributed entertainment magazine published by the Sterling-McFadden Group and distributed through Time-Warner, co-owner of Fullhouse Productions, one of the largest entertainment booking agencies in Hollywood, managing editor of Hollywood Rocks magazine, a public relations specialist with Whisenhunt Public Relations in Ventura County, a feature writer for the Ventura County Star Newspaper, a columnist for the Ventura County Reporter, and a freelance writer for numerous publications.
